Introduction
When it comes to designing or renovating your kitchen, choosing the right cabinets can make a significant impact on the overall look and functionality of the space. Cabinets not only serve as storage solutions but also act as a design element that can tie the entire kitchen together. With so many options available in the market, choosing the right cabinets can be a daunting task. Therefore, it is crucial to do your research and know what to look for before making a purchase.
The first thing to consider when choosing a cabinet is the type of material it is made from. Cabinets can be made from various materials, including wood, metal, laminate, or even glass. Each material has its own unique features and benefits, and the choice depends on personal preferences, budget, and the overall style of the kitchen. For example, wood cabinets are popular for their durability and timeless look, while metal cabinets offer a sleek, modern design.
Another important factor to consider is cabinet construction. Cabinets can be constructed in two ways: framed or frameless. Framed cabinets have a frame or border that surrounds the door, while frameless cabinets do not. Framed cabinets are traditional and offer a classic look, while frameless cabinets provide a contemporary and streamlined look.
The cabinet style and finish are also crucial elements to consider. The style of the cabinet should match the overall style of the kitchen, whether it is traditional, modern, or transitional. There are several popular cabinet styles, including shaker, raised panel, flat panel, and inset. The finish of the cabinet is also important as it adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the kitchen. Finishes can range from natural wood stains to painted finishes, and each finish has its own unique benefits and drawbacks.
Step 1: Assess your needs
Before purchasing cabinetry, you should first evaluate your own needs. What space are you designing? Need cabinets in your kitchen, bathroom or laundry room? Yes, space type matters. Because the cabinet will affect what you need to do. The cabinet styles we create for our kitchen spaces are very different from what we would choose for our hallways or home offices. The storage solution you want in your kitchen is more complex than a paper closet. Here are some things to consider when assessing your needs. Be sure to take notes and mention these considerations when you speak with one of Luxe Home’s designers. This way, we will recommend the best option for your home, style, and lifestyle!
1. Function of space
The first question when designing any space or function is how to use it. Design always focuses on functionality first. (Of course, they overlap styles, colors, etc.) So how will this space be utilized? How are cabinets used? For example, when talking about the kitchen, you might reply that the kitchen is used by “X” people, “this” is my cooking habits, and so on.
2. Key features you want to include
Now that you know the space and the purpose of the cabinets, you can start refining the details. What devices or accessories would you like to include in this cabinet? Pull-out shelves, lazy susans, tray dividers, spice drawers, wood paneling, docking drawers? Make sure to take notes and share this information with the designer.
3. Desired quality level
Regarding the quality level, you have three options. Prefabricated standard cabinets, prefabricated cabinets. Semi-custom cabinets are standard cabinets with additional detailing options. Or a fully custom cabinet built to your specifications. Naturally, the better the quality, the longer the cabinet will last and the more likely it will meet your desired features. However, we can work with you to discuss your budget and suggest one or two levels that are right for you.
4. Desired “ready time” (how soon it is needed) How quickly do cabinets need to be ready?
Cabinets can be manufactured in as little as 4 weeks (for standard designs) or up to 14 weeks (for custom designs). Contact a professional designer to share your preferred itinerary and get an idea of what to expect. If you want a custom cabinet but can’t wait more than a month, we recommend using stock or semi-order.
5. Budget Considerations
Last but not least, set a budget for your cabinets. Work with one of our in-store designers to discuss your budget and wishlist, and find the perfect price for your needs.
Step 2: Define your style
Like any other design element, cabinets come in many different styles. While we`re sure you have a specific style you gravitate toward, we highly suggest assessing the architectural style of your home, too. Your cabinets should work seamlessly with the style of the home. If you were to install sleek modern cabinets in, say, a Victorian home, they will look noticeably out of place! While you can certainly customize your cabinets to the style you prefer, it`s important to make sure that style fits with the rest of your home for a cohesive, beautiful look. Depending on the area you`re installing the cabinets in, you will also want to keep in mind the other fixed design elements that will not be changing. This includes floors, stucco, fireplaces, surrounds, and more. Our experienced design team can help here too!
Step 3: Sign up for a consultation to see cabinet options firsthand.
With all this information in mind, now is the time to see this beauty for yourself! There are so many cabinet features and finishes available that a simple Google search will leave you more indecisive than ever before. Make an appointment with a local design consultant (visit us if you’re near Lafayette!) and see the cabinets on display in the showroom for yourself. This allows you to test out the features and imagine how you use them every day.
Step 4: Finalize your selections
Once you`ve seen the different options available, and you have a pretty good understanding of the features you`ll need, you are ready to finalize your selections. Again, this is where a design professional can help make sure all of the details you choose work together. Those details include…
PICKING A FINISH
You might be wondering if a painted finish is more suitable for your cabinets. While painted cabinets are still the most popular finish choice for all spaces in a home, they do have certain characteristics. When you order a solid color finish, the wood beneath the paint is still moving due to climate changes that naturally occur in your home as seasons change. Cracks may appear at the joints of the frame and doors and at the drawer heads because the dried paint is not pliable and the wood is still expanding and contracting. This is not considered a defect and is barely noticeable to the naked eye.
Just look at this, ok! Let’s call it a character. If you don’t want to paint the surface, we can also discuss staining. Again, a visit to the local supplier is worth it as you will need to meet in person to make the right choice. When shopping for cabinets, you’ll often hear the words “framed” and “frameless.” These are the two main structural options.
FRAMED VS. INSET
Framed cabinets are known for their sturdiness. In this type of cabinet construction, the rails and stiles form a 1-1/2 inch face “frame” at the front of the cabinet box. This frame resembles a flat picture frame that is attached to the door front, giving it added dimension. You also have “frameless” cabinets which lack that added dimension.
On the other hand, built-in cabinetry is a subcategory of framed cabinetry. Instead of sitting “on top” of the frame, the drawers and doors are flush with the cabinet front. This type of cabinet design provides a full view of the cabinet frame by minimizing spaces or gaps between cabinet components.
Step 5: Place your order
Now that you’ve finished designing your closet, it’s time to place your order. As mentioned earlier, lead times may vary by manufacturer. The good thing is that you can very accurately predict when a cabinet is expected to be ready.
Conclusion
Choosing a cabinet can be a daunting task, but by considering these factors, you can make an informed decision that meets your needs and budget. Remember to do your research, take accurate measurements, and choose a cabinet that is both functional and stylish.
